Bingo History

The word “bingo” is a corruption of the word “beano”. It is currently a game that uses a 5x5 cardboard or paper sheet that is called a bingo card that have numbers in them. A caller draws the numbers randomly and shouts them out while the players mark their cards with markers or daubers.

The game of bingo is said to have originated from Italy in the year 1530 and was then called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia”. The game was introduced to France in 1770s and was called “Le Lotto”. Bingo finally came to American shores in the year 1929 and was known as “beano” because they used beans to mark the numbers in the cards. The first game of bingo was played in Atlanta, Georgia in a carnival.

During one fateful bingo game, a certain player got excited and accidentally shouted “bingo!” rather than “beano”. This was heard by a New York toy salesman by the name of Edwin S. Lowe. From then on, Lowe adopted the name bingo and it has been called as such ever since.

Lowe hired a math professor named Carl Leffler to increase the number of combinations of bingo cards. The bingo game became popular when a Catholic priest decided to use the game to increase church funds.

Through the years, bingo has evolved to include bingo video machines and online bingo games. Players presently have the option of playing bingo at the comforts of their own home.
